Art Library
Etherart
In Paris last year, the first virtual image was auctioned at Drouot. The buyer paid $12,000 for which he received an envelope containing a secret web address for a site with an image by artist Fred Forest. Any art-loving hackers out there feeling challenged by this?

Ekstrom Library
Administrative Offices
Sally Wren is now working with Debbie Hawley on payroll activities related to our student employees. Payroll/Personnel Data Sheets should now be directed to Sally.

Public Service Training for Student Assistants
Recently hired student assistants (or those who missed out last semester) are strongly encouraged to attend the next session on Saturday, March 7, from 11am until 1pm in the Ekstrom Staff Lounge. They will be paid for attending and will also be treated to lunch.

Deadline Approaching ... ... for submitting 1997 performance appraisals of library staff. Remember, this year we need the original plus one copy by Friday, March 6. Thanks.

Federal Work-Study
This semester we have hired several more work study students, which is good news for us and for them. Please note that work-study students cannot begin working for you until they have come to the Administrative Office for payroll processing. Under federal law we cannot pay them for time worked before they have enrolled. Financial Aid has asked us to remind supervisors that they are responsible for monitoring the student's earnings on the Record of Earnings form and ensuring that the student does not exceed the maximum award authorized. Departments cannot allow a student to work more than 40 hours per week and must not allow a work study student to work during a scheduled class period.

Attendance at Training Sessions
Computer training and other classes offered to library personnel are very costly, and there is usually a waiting list. An on-site class with a maximum of 12 participants, for example, costs us the same whether 12 or 7 or 3 attend. Anyone who preregisters for a class is expected to be present. In the event one must cancel, please be kind enough to notify the Administrative Office ahead of time so that someone else can be offered the opportunity. We cannot afford to waste training opportunities and limited resources due to arbitrary decisions not to attend. Any occurrences of no-shows will be taken into consideration upon subsequent requests for training.

Termination of Student Assistants
Over the past few weeks we have received quite a few termination notices on students who haven't worked since last July or August. Please report terminations as soon as possible to enable us to submit this paperwork in a more timely manner. Thanks for your cooperation.

Personnel News
Angela Klueber has resigned her position as Library Administrative Specialist (DADS Departmental Business Manager) effective Friday, March 13. Although this seems pretty unlucky, the last Friday the 13th brought good luck, so she's not worried. :)

The Libraries have entered into a contract (initially for calendar year 1998) with University Hospital to manage the Gradie R. Rowntree Medical Library. Jane Bottoms has been appointed as Librarian there on an 80% FTE basis. The remainder of her time will be at Kornhauser. We are in the process of filling a half-time Library Assistant III position to assist her.

Rebecca Noonan, the Library Assistant III in DADS responsible for circulation searches, holds, and recalls and for supervision of Course Reserves and evening/weekend operations (including Security Monitors), has been promoted to Library Associate. Rebecca assumed her new position as Interlibrary Loan, Access and Delivery Coordinator on March 1.

Erlinda Paguio has resigned her position in Monographs effective March 11. She has accepted the position of Program Coordinator in the Development Office. Congratulations on this great promotion!

Media and Current Periodicals
Bind us up, Scotty
The binding season is in full swing! This is not as much fun as it sounds; however, Eric and Trish continue to work out a better system for keeping up with the work, so it's more fun than it used to be. We even occasionally catch a glimpse of them behind the barricades of carts covered with periodicals. Although the materials still leave the library to get bound, they are only gone for three weeks now. The people in Interlibrary Loan are happy to order materials that are temporarily unavailable, so the process is going quite smoothly for patrons also.

Exciting New Computer Developments
Eric, our resident Microsoft Access guru--he calls himself a geek, but guru is more apt--has figured out how to create a combo box. Wendy has added a new couplet to her ongoing poetic saga about the life of a Neo-Luddite on the front line of the Technowars:

    We must decide if Lexis-Nexis
Will connect or just perplex us.

Special Collections
When Technical meets Public ...
Amy Purcell, whose duties include cataloging and description for the holdings of Special Collections, has begun taking her turn on the Special Collection's reference desk. It is believed that by interacting with those researching Special Collections, Amy will have a better perspective from which to enhance the content access process. Now ALL staff in Special Collections share this duty.

An Afternoon with UofL
Andy Anderson, Chuck Hughes, Margaret Merrick and Margo Smith staffed the booth at this year's "An Afternoon with UofL," in the SAC on Saturday, February 28. The event provides an opportunity for high school seniors and their parents to get to know a little more about what UofL has to offer. This year the University Libraries booth had a PC and ethernet connection, which is always popular. Visitors to the booth viewed Library web pages and the online exhibition Andy produced for Women's History Month last year. Andy greeted visitors at the door and gave each one a Library Guide in one of the Libraries' new plastic bags. From conversations with the visitors, Andy estimates 90% of these visiting students had access to the Internet. He was sure to point out our URL on the bag!

Kersey Library
Engineering Days
The celebration of Engineering Days took place on February 22 and 23. The doors of Speed School were open to the public. As usual during Engineering Days there were tours for students from Kentucky, Indiana and Cincinnati-area high schools. Speed School students tested high school students' entries in contests for model bridge design, balloon inflation, computer programs and more. Kersey Library has an exhibit, Careers in Science and Engineering to tie in with Engineering Days. This exhibit (by Carol Brinkman and Pat Waters) captured the attention of quite a few students. Tours of the Library were offered as part of the engineering event.

March Birthdays
Rama Puttagunta and Wassile Ibrahim celebrate their birthdays this month. Kersey Library would like to extend to everyone who is celebrating this month a very Happy Birthday!

Kornhauser Library
Kornhauser's daily activities continue. The rampant flu bug ran its course throughout Tech Services last month. Let's hope it's finally gone for good!

Michel Atlas recently returned from a trip to Paris. Highlights include visiting the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée Marmottan. The Musée Marmottan has the largest collection of Monet outside of the Musée d'Orsay. It's located in a charming old house owned by father and son art historians. The Musée Marmottan also contains a collection by Berthe Morisot (a female impressionist) and a collection of illuminated manuscripts. The Eiffel Tower had a large, lighted sign on it, which said J-680. Michel was quite dismayed when she thought it was an advertisement, only to find out that it is a countdown to the millenium. Michel also took advantage of airline mechanical problems in Atlanta to visit her daughter at Emory University.

Kathy Rogers returned from a road trip to Milwaukee's Bradley Center to see the UofL / Marquette basketball game. Marquette's head coach didn't disappoint, receiving at least one technical foul. Louisville lost. Boo!

Law Library

University Archives and Records Center
As of February 12, Kathie Johnson is a member of the Women's Studies Affiliated Faculty. This is a culmination of an application process and over a year of participation in all aspects of the Women's Studies program: attending faculty meetings, attending the faculty retreat, and serving on committees. This collaboration with Women's Studies will enhance her abilities to aid researchers working with UARC's collections of women's primary source materials. (see feature story.)
