Louisville Dining:
A Sampling of the Regular and the Unleaded

It’s summertime, and you know what that means! More free time, which means more time to get out, relax and enjoy fine food.

Perhaps you have experienced it: you have dinner plans; everyone in your party has a different idea about good cuisine and where to find it. Some people are fine cooks and are far more critical of restaurant cuisine. On the other hand, when it comes to healthy low-fat eating, I can be quite critical and stubborn on where and what I eat.

Chances are when folks go out to eat, someone in the group may have varying dietary needs. Many people have restrictions on what they consume due to health, political, religious, social, and spiritual reasons.

During the past seven years, since I changed my dietary habits, I have dined out quite a bit with others who do not eat like I do. In the beginning it was quite frustrating. I experienced a couple of instances that were almost maddening, but over the years, I have come to think of dining out as not only an adventure and a challenge, but also as a game.

Here is a list of restaurants that provide variety for everyone, from those who eat lower-fat diets to those who eat whatever they please. At each of these restaurants, I have found that one can order items prepared alternatively to lower the fat; they provide baked, broiled, grilled, and steamed items and will also reduce or eliminate sauces and spreads upon request. The following list is selective, not comprehensive. The Louisville area is blessed with many fine restaurants.

I have used restaurant critic Robin Garr’s rating system for the pricing of the restaurants:

$$$$ = expensive ($50-up)
$$$ = upscale ($30-$50)
$$ = modest ($15-$30)
$ = budget (under $15)

So, there is no excuse for not eating out once in a while. Everyone can eat healthy, avoid conflicts with friends or loved ones over food preparation, and enjoy a fine dining experience while out on the town in Louisville.
