An "English" guy adds salt to the ice surrounding the cream can in the ice-cream maker. The salt causes the ice to melt, pulling heat from the cream can and freezing the contents, producing...ICE CREAM! The Amish lump all non-Amish into the generic category of "English." This harks back to the first Amish settlement in Lancaster County in the 18th Century when there were only Amish and English living there.
